History of Radio London:

Radio London (not to be confused with various BBC local radio stations with similar names) was, with Radio Caroline, the best-known of the offshore pop pirate radio stations of the 1960s. It ran from late 1964 until August 1967, when the government's Marine Offences Act, which outlawed pirate radio, forced it to close down.

Early in 1967 – I was married at the time to an American girl, and it was a fairly catastrophic marriage, so I decided to get out of the area to the extent of coming back to Britain. And went to live with my mother in Notting Hill. And obviously I had no work, and no expectation of work

a fellow who was living next to her at the time had dealings with Radio London, the pirate ship, and he said why didn’t I go along and see Alan Keane, who was running the station from the offices in Curzon Street. So I went along. Fortunately, they didn’t ask me to audition. I just said I’d been working on the radio in California and they were sufficiently impressed by this to give me a job. And I was very pleased to get it, because as I said, my marriage was in tatters already and the idea of being on a ship for two weeks out of three seemed to be terribly appealing, because it meant I was away from domestic strife.

So I went out there, and as junior member of the team, I had to do two programmes. I had to do a daytime programme, which was just the regular Radio London fare, you know. They used to play a lot of new records – more new records and more artfully chosen new records. I mean, they weren’t bought on, unlike Caroline. But I also had to do a late night programme, from 12 until 2. And initially I used to just do this as I had done the other programme. I mean, run all the commercials and do the weather and the news and all of the things that I was supposed to do.

Gradually it dawned on me that no one was actually listening to this programme – I mean, no one in the Radio London office, and certainly none of the people on the ship. So I started to improvise a little bit and gradually stopped running the ads and so on, and playing more of this music that I had brought back from America with me. And also adding a British dimension with people like the Incredible String Band and Hendrix and Pink Floyd, I suppose, Tyrannosaurus Rex, all these sort of people. I called the programme the Perfumed Garden..

En 1967 j'etais marié a une américaine, et le mariage était catastrophique, alors j’ai décidé de revenir en Grande-Bretagne et de vivre avec ma mère a Notting- Hill, et je n’avais aucune intention de travailler.

Un voisin de ma mère était en relation avec Radio London sur le bateau pirate et m'a suggéré  d’aller voir Alan Keane qui gérait les bureaux de la radio a Curzon Street. Alors j’y suis allé et heureusement ils ne m’ont pas demandé d’auditionner. Comme j’avais travaillé  a Radio California, ca les a suffisamment impressionné, du coup ils m’ont donné le job, et j’étais très heureux, car comme je disais, mon mariage était en train de s’écrouler et l’idée d’être sur le bateau pendant  deux ou trois semaines me tentait terriblement. Ca me permettait de me distancer de mes problèmes conjugaux, donc j’y suis allé. En tant que membre junior de l’équipage, je devais faire deux programmes, un en journée, le programme régulier: Ils passaient de nouveaux disques, des disques plus originaux, pas commerciaux, pas comme Radio Caroline, mais je devais aussi faire un programme de nuit, de minuit a 2 heures. Et initialement je devais juste faire ca, les pubs, lire les nouvelles, ce que j’étais censé faire. Peu a peu il m’est apparu qu’en fait personne n’écoutait ce programme, personne aux bureaux de Londres et sans nul doute personne sur le bateau, alors j’ai commencé a improviser un peu, j’ai commencé a arrêter les pubs etc, a mettre les disques que j’avais ramené d’Amérique,  en y  ajoutant une dimension britannique, comme The Incredible String Band ou Hendrix et Pink Floyd, T Rex, ce genre de groupes. J’ai appelé ce programme « the perfumed garden ». J’avais complètement renié le format radio et je lisais les poèmes très mal: des gens qui écrivaient des poèmes et me les envoyaient . C’était « the summer of love » et c’était une devenu un programme culte pour ceux qui  aimaient ca. C’était a travers toute l’Europe du Nord, d’ailleurs je rencontre encore en Hollande des gens qui y étaient « oh oui je me souviens très bien, on se souvient de Perfumed Garden », et c’est tres sympa qu’ils sen souviennent encore. Et Alan Keane a été félicité par son boss pour son idée avant gardiste de lancer ce programme, bien que s’il l’avait écouté il aurait été horrifié (rires)! Mais quand ca a commencé Radio London n’avait de toute manière plus que quelques mois a vivre, donc ils ont décidé de laisser couler.
